GRADY SPIKES

CHAIRMAN 1988

Mr. Spikes was Montgomery County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3. He came to Conroe in 1964 to coach at Conroe High School. He retired from coaching to manage Clark Bottling Company in Conroe. He was elected to the Justice of the Peace office in 1990 and served three terms unopposed until his death. He and his wife, Annette had two sons, G. Trey Spikes, who followed his father as Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace and Barkley W. Spikes.

Grady was always willing to give his time. A friend recalls, “He was the best hawker in the county.” He was called on by many organizations for this talent including the Humane Society, Cattle Barons Ball and Montgomery County Fair. He was a dedicated worker in the Fair Association, serving for many years on numerous committees.

Grady loved people and loved to have fun, and that spilled over into his year as Chamber Chairman. The Annual Banquet was changed forever – it took on a new flavor, which delighted the membership. For years, the banquet had been held at the Conroe High School cafetorium. Grady moved it to the new Del Lago Resort and Conference Center and changed the agenda to a dance and dinner. The banquet took on a whole new dimension and has remained that way to this day. It became a good time for family fun.
