CHAMBER

  • Moved to Conroe in 1963 as branch manager of then University Savings and Loan
  • Member of the Chamber for 45 years
  • Chamber President 1982; served on Board of Directors several times
  • Chairman of the Mobility Committee for several years where he did the following:
    – Spearheaded countywide road bond issue in 1983
    – Led group consisting of Chamber and civic leaders to Austin to lobby TXDoT for funding of South Loop 336
    – Led a separate group to lobby TXDoT, this time to secure funds for widening US 75 from North Loop 336 to present day FM 3083
    – Officer in FM 3083 Corporation, which secured right-of-way and engineering for FM 3083
  • He showed above average commitment to the Chamber throughout the years, taking a responsible role in every assignment, request, or project in which he was involved.
  • Mobility has always been Burge’s chosen project. From hearings in Austin with TXDoT to local projects requiring hours of commitment with regional and district highway officials, John is there representing the Chamber and Montgomery County with integrity, always fully prepared and knowledgeable.

CIVIC AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

  • Served in Conroe Noon Lions Club for 45 years
    – President 1971 – 1972
    – Deputy District Governor 1973 – 1975
    – Director Children’s Camp – Kerrville, TX 1975 – 1976
    – Lifetime member Lions International
  • Lifetime VP and member Montgomery County Fair Association
  • Lifetime member Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
  • Helped organize annual Go Texan Parade
  • Master peace officer license
  • Captain in Reserve Unit, Montgomery County Sheriff’s office since 1972
  • Active member First United Methodist Church, Conroe having served on every board or committee there during his 45 years as a member
  • Chairman-City Parks Board since 1982
  • President – Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Volunteers Inc.
  • Served on Montgomery County Appraisal District
